Introduction
At CATTs (Cancer Awareness for Teens & Twenties), we will always endeavour to keep any personal information you share with us safe.
We are committed to using your personal information in accordance with applicable laws, and only using your personal information where you would reasonably expect us to.
This notice aims to clearly tell you how we collect your personal information, how we use it, how we keep it secure and your choices about its use.
This notice will be regularly reviewed and where necessary to take into account any changes to our activities or regulatory changes. We encourage you to review it from time to time. If we make any significant changes, we will endeavour to communicate this to you where possible.

What is ‘personal information’?
Personal information (formally known as ‘personal data’) is information that can be used to identify you.
We collect information such as your name, date of birth, email address, postal address, telephone number, mobile telephone number, credit/debit card details and whether you are a UK tax payer so that we can claim Gift Aid.
When we collect sensitive personal information about your health or personal circumstances, we only ask you for it when there is a clear reason for doing so. For example, if you’re supporting us with a campaign, helping us design a service or sharing your story. We will always clearly tell you how your information will be used, give you choices about this and not use it for any other purpose.
How do we collect your personal information?
We collect personal information about you in various ways via our website forms, over the phone or face to face. This may be when you;
- Sign up to volunteer for us or apply for a job
- Request information or sign up for one of our events
- Make a donation
- Subscribe to our newsletter
- Request awareness or fundraising materials
- Engage with our social media channels
- Order merchandise
- Wish to arrange a workshop
- Complete one of our surveys
- Visit our website and we collected technical information (please see our Cookie Notice)
Information we receive from other organisations
Your information may be shared with us by third party organisations including fundraising sites such as JustGiving, or sites to process donations such as Stripe or PayPal. These are not exhaustive examples. Please do take the time to read their privacy policies carefully to understand how they will process your information and what they share with us.
Examples of personal information we may receive are, names, postal address, telephone number, age, date of birth, email address, gift aid information and card details.
How do we use your personal information?
We use your personal information for a variety of reasons, such as;

We will only handle your personal data if the following conditions apply:
- You have consented to its collection and use for specific purposes.
- The collection and use are necessary in order for us to comply with our obligations under a contract or agreement between you and us (or to take necessary steps before entering into a contract / agreement).
- It is necessary for a legal obligation placed upon us.
- It is in our legitimate interests, and we have carefully balanced our interests with your privacy rights and freedoms.
- In exceptional circumstances we may handle your personal information for reasons or public interests or to protect your vital interests.
What about sensitive information?
Some of the personal information that you may choose to share with us may be sensitive, including what is legally called ‘special categories of personal data’. This is personal information could be relating to your racial or ethnic origin, your health, religious or sexual orientation, sex life, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs. Some of this information may have been given to us anonymously, but some may have not. We will always make it clear to you when information is and isn’t anonymous.
We will keep this personal information confidential and it will be processed under even stricter rules. Staff at CATTs have had training on how to look after sensitive personal information.
Sharing your personal information
CATTs will not sell any personal information with other organisations for marketing or any other purpose. We may need to share your personal information if required to do so by law.
Your privacy rights
You have a number of rights under data protection law, you can exercise theses rights at any time.
- You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you and to know the purposes for which we are using it. We may need to ask for proof of your identity. We will endeavour to respond to your request within one calendar month, if this is not possible, we will give you clear reasons why.
- You can ask us to update your personal information or tell us to amend it if the information we hold is incorrect.
- You always have the right to object to marketing communications from us.
- Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw this at any time
- You have the right to ask us to delete your personal information. Unless we have reasonable grounds to refuse, we will securely delete the personal information in question within one month.
- You also have the right to restrict how we are using your personal information or to object to our use of it.

How do we look after your personal information?
At CATTs, we are committed to looking after your personal information and have measures in place to do so securely. We take all reasonable steps to makes sure appropriate measures are in place to protect your personal information. Such measures may in include (but are not limited to):
- Securely disposing of or deleting your personal information when it is no longer required.
- Working closely with our IT and other service providers and ensure they use appropriate security when dealing with personal information.
- All financial transactions are undertaken on secure encrypted third-party sites.
- Sensitive personal information is only looked after by trained authorised staff.
Where we use external service provides to handle your personal data on our behalf, we make sure we have appropriate agreements and contractual arrangement in place to protect your information and keep it secure.
Our Cookie Policy
A cookie is a small piece of information sent by a web server to a web browser, which enables the server to collect information from the browser and us to track the use of our website. We use cookies to help us understand what our users’ interests and preferences are to ensure the website is as user friendly as possible. You can find our Cookie Policy here.
This helps us to improve our website and deliver a better more personalised service. It is possible to switch off cookies by setting your browser preferences.
How long will we keep your personal information?
We will only keep your personal information for as long as is necessary for the purposes we are using it for.
Where we have your consent, we may seek to renew this after two years. If you do not respond, we will cease to hold your personal information for that purpose (for example emailing you about news events and opportunities.
